About Henry "Hank" Stewart

Hank Stewart, Emmy Award Winning Poet

Ribault Class of 1981 The poet who grace the main stage of ESSENCE Music Festival, the Author of McDonaldʼs 365 Black Poem, Emmy Award Winning Poet for commercials for Fox 5 Black History month, Founder of the Annual Hank Stewart's White Linen Affair,5 Men on a Stool. If you have ever read the work of inspirational speaker and poet, Hank Stewart, then you might find it hard to believe that this profoundly talented writer did not pen his first poem until May of 1991. Stewart, a self-published writer who has been called a catalyst for action and a messenger of hope, considers spirituality, history and love as his major influences for delving into the world of literature. "My (life) experiences have had a great influence on the poetry… Poetry has help me to deal with many issues," says Hank, who released his first book titled, "The Answer" in 1993. "The Answer", a collection of poetry, which expressed the issues of love, unity and religion, uniquely introduced Stewart as a conscious writer among a culture of literary enthusiast. Shortly thereafter, Hank followed up his first work with a second book fittingly titled, "Second Chance" which was written to reveal the Savior to lost souls and to rejuvenate the Christian experience. In 1996, Hank wrote his third book, "Be Still and Know…" a religiously conscious collection of works focusing on the power of prayer and the importance of spiritual guidance. A devoted Christian, Hank believes that a firm spiritual guidance can help an individual remain true to the mission of life and success. Therefore, he incorporates this belief in his poetry by encouraging people to move to new emotional heights and spiritual levels. "I think conscious poetry is important… It documents history. It’s a message to people who don’t always have a chance to listen to long sermons. If you look back over time poetry has made its way into every aspect of life…" In 1997, Stewart released a special edition of poems in his book, "Daydreaming About You", which preceded two works, "Stay Focused" and "Stay Focus" both published in 1998. The Journey With the popularity of the merging of poetry and jazz within the literary culture, Stewart soon began to transform his written work into "Spoken Word" poetry, which earned him a regular guest spot on the "Quiet Storm", a weekly radio broadcasting show highlighting talented poetry and jazz artists on one of Atlanta’s top radio stations, V-103. Over the past fifteen years, Hank Stewart’s poetry has awarded him many opportunities including working on programs with prominent officials such as former Vice President, Al Gore and contributing a piece honoring the mother of the civil rights movement, Rosa Parks with a special poetry dedication. Mr. Stewart has recited his works for Rev Jesse L. Jackson Sr. , Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and Dr. Joseph E. Lowery. He also presented Mr. Carl Ware of The Coca Cola Company a special piece of his work. Hank has also performed at the 2003 and 2005 Essence Music Festival. He has written and performed “365 BLACK” commercials for McDonald Corporation. He has also written and performed Black History Commercials for Fox 5 February 2006. He preformed on programs with Chaka Khan, Kem. He's been on programs with Tavis Smiley, Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons, the late Rev. Hosea Williams, Johnny Cochran and the list go on and on. Always looking to advance his career to the next level, Stewart considers his plight as an author to inspire people to achieve maximum success and to touch as many lives as possible with a message of spirituality, love and history. "I want to leave a positive legacy, be it spiritual, love or history… I want people to think,’ whatever Hank Stewart wrote about touched me’." Reference: http://www.myspace.com/hankstewart

S. P. Livingston Elementary School Presents their 2010 Kindergarten Completion Graduating Class

On Friday, June 4th 2010 I had the distinct pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony for the kindergarten class of S. P. Livingston Elementary School. The invite was compliments of Mr. Lawrence Buckner. Buckner’s band along with the Douglas Anderson (School of the Performing Arts) Orchestra serenaded these youngster’s while they were acknowledged for their efforts and outstanding achievements for the 2009- 2010 school year. The graduating ceremony was memorable to say the least. Buckner’s band played the melody, as the children and faculty alike, harmonized to the tune of “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly. Many accolades to the faculty and staff that made this ceremony possible; Jenifer L. Brown, Principal, Violet E. Stovall, Assistant Principal, Jackie Bryd, Executive Director. Captioned in the collage below are photographs of this event.

Lawrence a native of Jacksonville, Florida was born under the zodiac sign of Cancer on July 11, 1963. He attended Oceanway Elementary, Ribault Junior, and graduated from Ribault Senior High School in 1981. In an exclusive interview with Lawrence, he advised "he began his journey with music in the seventh grade." Buckner contends, he was extremely elated  when he was selected as Section Leader during his tenure at Ribault Senior High School while playing in the Trojan band. After graduating in 1981, Buckner joined the United States Army and was deployed to Panama (during the Noriega years). During his military service to our country, Lawrence found time to embark on his passion in the 79th Army Band; music. Upon completion of his tour of duty, Buckner returned to Jacksonville and enrolled in Edward Waters College where he earned his BS degree in Biological Science Pre-Med in 1999. Lawrence is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.,  a Natonal Honors Student, further was listed in Who' Who amongst American College Students.  Lawrence whom humbly admits academics played a minor role in his life while attending high school - graduated Magna Cum-laude from college with a GPA of 3.7.

Philosophy:  Lawrence believes that all things can be achieved        through hard work, dedication, and focus.

Musical Career: Lawrence has had the distinct pleasure of playing in an array of famous bands and performing duets with equally acclaimed solo musicians/artists. They are as follows: Vision featuring Billy Powell of "Lynyrd Skynyrd", Mark Farner of "Grand Funk" and duets with Jazz Organist Shirley Scott, Branford Marsalis; Saxophonist, Wallace Roney; Trumpet Player, and Louie Belson; Drummer - to mention a few.

Hobbies: Lawrence enjoys reading, painting, listening to music, and collecting movies; Spike Lee & Mario Van Peebles directed movies rank amongst his favorites.
