Legendary Ribault High Coach Dies UPDATED: 5:10 pm EST March 6,2006 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After three decades coaching and mentoring young men at
Ribault High School, Bernard Wilkes has died. Wilkes, 57, died in his sleep Sunday morning from an apparent heart attack.Wilkes had coached the Ribault boys' basketball team for 30 years, leading the Trojans to four state championships."He's a legend in the state of Florida, for sure," said Al Austin, Ribault's athletic director.Wilkes
"When we win like champions, when we lose like men; excuses do not excuse and explanations do no explain. That was Coach Wilkes. That was his philosophy," said John Stafford, assistant principal of
Duval County
"When you played against Bernard, it was a hard-fought, very competitive ball game, but his kids always conducted themselves in a very professional, very gentlemanly manner," said Duval County schools' athletic director, John Fox "We are very, very much going to miss Bernard Wilkes." Upon hearing the news, many of Wilkes' former players returned to Ribault to pay their respects.
"The number who have come back this morning and who have been calling is a testament to
the person he was and the message that he instilled in them," said principal Royce Turner. Friends said Wilkes battled diabetes, but maintained his health.
"He's been going through a few little changes, but he made adjustments. He used to be kind
of fiery coach, but he kind of settled down," Austin told Channel 4's Bryan Kelly. Turner said he hopes to have a memorial service in the school's gym on Friday, saying it's the place
where many former students and friends came to know him the best. Copyright 2007 by News4Jax.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. ------------------------------------------
